IMPORTANCE
OF LITERATURE
1.
Wisdom of good and evil
Literature
cultivates knowledge in the mind of the readers and provides wisdom of good and
evil; and experiences the call to justice. Though literature can never itself
make us a better person it can play a major role in assisting us in the quest.
It can enhance our way of living after examining and understanding the meanings
and moral lessons hiding in literary texts. (We learn what is healthy and
destructive in the world and are challenged to face injustice and its
consequences. Literature can challenge us to ask what we can do to eliminate
the problems that have been portrayed.
2.
Literature is a powerful stress reliever
It’s
no secret to readers that literature can relieve stress and anxiety. Taking
time out of the day to sit back and get lost in a good book does wonders for a
stressed mind. Studies show it can slow down a rapid heartbeat, which is a
common sign of anxiety, and take a reader’s mind off of racing thoughts. In
2009, Sussex University conducted a study on the effect of reading and found
that reading for only six minutes reduced stress by up to 68%. That made
reading a better way to handle stress than listening to music or
walking.
3.
Communication skills are improved by reading literature
Reading improves a reader’s ability to write, which helps them to become a better communicator. This extends to their daily interactions and conversations as well. Every aspect of life requires good communication, from career to personal relationships. When people are exposed to literature at a young age, they are able to build communication skills right away. Reading helps adults enhance their communication skills.
