Essay and
written answer exams
This is
the most common type of exam. You answer a certain number of questions without
using a textbook or notes, although you might be able to use a calculator or
other equipment in maths or science exams. You normally have to write down and
explain the reasons for your answer, including your calculations in a maths
exam.
These exams are normally sat in a classroom or exam hall.
Essay exams are designed to test not just how well you
understand the subject, but also your memory for facts. This means effective
revision is essential, since you can’t take notes or prompters in with you.
Knowing the type of test you’re going to be taking
can be as important as knowing the answers. You will need to revise in
different ways depending on the type of exam, so ask your tutors about the
nature of the exam and what you can do to prepare well in advance...
