Tips in Doing Essay Exams
Essay exams are designed to test not just how well
you understand the subject, but also your memory for facts. This means
effective revision is essential, since you can’t take notes or prompters in
with you.
Top tips
- Read every question carefully before you
begin. Look at how many marks are awarded for each question as some may be
worth more than others, so you’ll need to spend longer on the answers for
those.
- If you have a choice of questions to answer,
go for the ones you feel most confident about – but make sure you answer
the right number! Keep an eye on the clock so you’ve got enough time to
answer all the questions you need, and end each answer properly rather
than leaving anything half-finished.
- If it’s an essay question, try to write down
the main points you want to make before you start. Then put these points in
your introduction before expanding on them in the main answer.
