Ways to Promote Sports and Education
(Physical Education)
Physical
Education is an important aspect of student learning, especially at a young
age. You can make a difference in physical education by being a teacher,
parent, or student. You can make physical education more fun and encourage
after-school activities. All students can enjoy and excel in many types of
physical activities if they are enrolled in a high-quality physical education
program in India.

Know How to Improve Physical Education in Schools
Celebrate fitness with festivals
Give
your students a chance to celebrate something, even if it is physical
activity. The International Day of Sport for Development and
Peace initiative by the United Nations is just one day where schools can
invite students’ families and other community members to participate in
developing before-and after-school programmes. Sports festivals are a great
platform for parents and students to come together and brainstorm additional
events and ideas for the festival. From triathlons, hula-hooping, sack races or
egg and spoon races, the whole community can get involved in a sport.
Let students take charge through Sports
Clubs
Student
can build their own programs from scratch and transform the way they look at
fitness with groups and activities that interest them. Sports clubs allow
students to take on accountability and responsibility, giving them a sense of fulfilment,
while developing competencies that can be applied within the school and beyond.
Sports clubs also help young adults build lasting friendships and make
them feel part of a wider community. Our own programme Youth Sports Leadership
works by training teachers and coaches in coaching and mentoring skills that
help them enable 15-16-year-old students to become ‘young sports leaders’.
These students then go on to further develop their leadership skills
by organizing sports festivals in their cities and communities and
train 11-12-year-olds to build their own leadership skills to make sport
sustainable in their schools. You can read more about our programme
Promote collaboration between physical
education and classroom teachers.
For
example, physical education teachers might provide ideas for "fitness
breaks" to classroom teachers, where 5-minute aerobic activities could be
used to break up the school day.
Provide
extracurricular physical activity programs. Interested teachers and parents
might be encouraged to establish developmentally appropriate clubs and/or
intramural activities of a competitive and non-competitive nature. Walking
clubs, in-line skating, jumping rope, water aerobics, and intramural swim teams
provide a few examples.
Coordinate physical activities with
community agencies
Schools
might allow use of school facilities by community agencies that sponsor
physical activity programs, facilitate training programs for volunteer youth
coaches, invite community groups to an "activity fair" for students
in the school gymnasium, or provide a listing of community physical activity
resources to students.
Provide physical and social environments
that encourage and enable physical activity
For example, schools might allow access to facilities before and after school hours and during vacation periods, encourage teachers to provide time for unstructured physical activity during recess and during physical education class, and help school personnel to serve as active role models by enabling and encouraging their own participation in physical activity.
