The Importance of Life Skills in Schools
Life
skills are defined as the capabilities that enable individuals to take adaptive
and positive behaviour that makes them able to deal with the events and
challenges of everyday life and to participate in the modern world full of new
challenges and handle everything from interactions with others to identifying
and processing emotions.
In
school, students learn how to read and write. They learn about science,
mathematics, sports, and history. They even learn about human sexuality and
reproduction. Seems strange that they don’t learn basic life skills, doesn’t
it? Why are we not teaching kids critical skills such as effective
communication, personal decision making, realistic goal setting, conflict
resolution, and social responsibility in every school?
Life
skills don’t just affect the way students interact with the world, but also the
way they see the world. In order to positively change their personal
trajectory, they first need a solid understanding of how to actualize positive
change. Goal setting and effective communication are essential.
While
people of all ages can benefit from life skills training and instruction, it’s
important to teach these skills as early as possible. Learning life skills
helps our children create better futures for themselves and for the world at
large: Young people involved in gangs leave them and become responsible
individuals, misdirected youths become positive contributing community members,
and students graduate from high school better equipped for college and
rewarding careers.
Importance
of Life Skills Education:
1. Building Confidence
Life
skills education helps students build confidence in both communication and
cooperative & collaborative skills, provide them with tools important for
development, find new ways of thinking and problem-solving and provide methods
on how to socialize, make new friends and recognize the impact of their actions
and behaviours.
2. Solving Challenges
If we
want to live life successfully, then we need to understand the importance of
life skills. And it is also very important to implement it in our life. If this
happens then our life can move in a simple and right direction. Life skills
make us competent to know how to make our life easy and simple, how to create a
positive life, and how life can be spent in the right way. It polishes the
ability to adapt to all kinds of circumstances and succeed in every aspect of
society. Lack of life skills in the lives of new generations needs to be taken
care of as it is important in life.
3. Expressing Themselves
One
key life skill is for students to be able to articulate and convey how they
feel. It is equally important for them to learn how to be effective listeners
and to respect diverse opinions and cultures to treat every conversation as if
the person they are speaking with may have something to teach them. A slight
shift in perspective can change someone’s entire life for the better.
4. Taking Actions
Life
skills also help students take action in situations where their parents or
teachers may not be available and make themselves take responsibility for what
they do instead of blaming others.
How to Promote Life Skills for Young
Students
Parents
can take an active role in teaching life-skills at home with projects
that provide real world examples and lessons in decision making and problem
solving. They can be as simple as assigning household chores and budgeting
exercises through an allowance, to caring
for a pet or volunteering in the community.
Fun and simple-to-organize activities, like game nights (or afternoons) with family and friends with an educational focus that also encourage working in teams, can help to build social and interpersonal skills.
