HOW TO PERFORM BETTER IN GEOGRAPHY
1. Start with The
Continents
Much like how it is easier
to explain Mathematics at the basic level first, Geography is also a whole lot
easier at the basic level. And one of the most basic levels of Geography starts
with knowledge about each continent. This knowledge doesn’t have to include all
the countries that belong to a specific continent. One can start by learning
where each continent is situated in the globe and their borders with other
continents.
2. Visualise information
For most of us, it’s far
easier to remember the details of a picture (what we see) than the details of a
lecture (what we hear). Visualisation is a memorisation strategy that can be
used when studying just about any subject, but it’s particularly effective when
studying geography. Visualisation can be applied in two ways. First, it can be
applied by creating images in your mind that relate to an abstract concept.
Second, and more importantly, it is applied by associating geographical
information with location, size and shape. For example, learning all 50 states
in the United States of America is far easier when memorising their location on
a map, and associating them with their shape and size, than trying to memorise
a written list.
3. Use technology and digital
resources
Using technology and
digital resources can make geography more interactive and engaging for students
ages 6-10. For example, teachers can use educational apps, interactive maps,
and videos to show students different parts of the world and teach them about
different cultures and landmarks. Teachers can also use virtual reality
headsets to take students on virtual field trips to different parts of the
world.
4. Be Knowledgeable About
Large Bodies of Water
Geography is not only
limited to landmasses but can sometimes also include bodies of water. Think of
all the great oceans that encompass the very continents you are studying. Think
about the rivers that gave birth and life to early civilizations.
Knowledge about bodies of
water is just as important as knowledge about the landmasses located in a
country as they also serve an important role in shaping the geography of a
certain place. Knowledge about large bodies of water and the continents is the
basics of geography and will be the foundation for other knowledge you will
learn as you continue to study geography.
5. Frequent Reviewing
If you want to do well in your geography class, it’s important that you
frequently review your notes. One of the keys to memory retention and recall is
to consistently review your notes and other study materials weeks before your
exam(s). Geography is one of those classes where students like to cram. It is
possible to memorize all the states in a country overnight, but the information
won’t stick with you very long after your test. To move information from your
short-term to long-term memory, frequent reviewing is necessary.
