HOW TO PERFORM BETTER IN WASHING CLOTHES
1. Prep
Clothes Before Placing in the Washer
Before
you toss items into the washing machine, remove pins or buckles, zip zippers,
close snaps and hooks, and secure Velcro to prevent snags and abrasions. But
don't button buttons—this can stress the buttons themselves and buttonholes.
Next,
empty pockets and turn them inside out, unfurl socks, and unroll cuffs. Tie
sashes and strings to prevent tangling. Place delicate items like lingerie and
fine knitwear in zippered mesh bags. Turn delicate items, sweaters, and cotton
T-shirts inside out to prevent pilling.
2. Select the right water
temperature
Selecting the right water
temperature is essential to help prevent colors from bleeding and preserve
fabrics. The best temperature depends on the color, fabric and how dirty your
clothes are. For items with stains, warm water is usually the best option.
Cold water: Best for
washing delicates, fabrics likely to shrink, bright or dark-colored fabrics,
linens and mixed loads. Cold water is also great for removing tough stains
like hair dye.
Warm water: Use for
fabrics like nylon and poly-blends, blouses, dresses, pants and fabrics that
shouldn’t be ironed.
Hot water: Wash
towels, sheets, heavily soiled items and pre-shrunk fabrics with hot water. Hot
water can help remove stains like sweat, nail polish, makeup, grass and lipstick.
3. Tie Drawstrings Before
Washing to Keep them In Place
The drawstrings in sweatpants, pajama bottoms, hoodies, or other items with drawstrings can come out of their channels during the wash cycle. No one has time to fish the string back through the hole, and you may end up tossing the item or removing the string in frustration.
Prevent this from happening
by loosely tying drawstrings together as you put the item in the washing
machine. Check to make sure they’re still tied before tumble drying. This will
also keep the strings from wrapping around other items and creating a twisted
tangle you don’t want to see when you open the machine.
