PERFORM BETTER IN BIBLE TUDY – PART 2
5. Write down what you learn
Don’t forget the things you’ve learned from the
Bible or the things that the Holy Spirit teaches you through your study.
Use a journal or notebook to keep track of the insights you pick up as you
read. The more respect we show for the things we learn; the more God will want
to share with us.
6. Find a Study Buddy
To get the most out of your Bible study, don’t go
it alone! Find a trusted friend, pastor, or other person who is as serious and
focused about studying the Bible as you are. We were created as relational
beings, engineered to “motivate one another” and to “not neglect meeting
together” but to “encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:24, 25, NLT).
7. Learn What the Bible Was Written for and Study
in Context
Understanding the cultural and historical context
in which the Bible was written is essential. For example, some books were
written for specific audiences or to address specific issues. Knowing this
context can help you better understand the meaning of the text and how it
applies to your life. Consider reading books or watching documentaries that
provide background information about the time and place in which the Bible was
written.
8. Have a plan
If we’re reading the Bible regularly, it’s best not to open the Bible to a random place every day. Nor is it always good to go wherever our whims take us. This is because randomness disallows us from reading the Bible in any coherent order—and reading the Bible in some kind of order helps us understand it better.
