DO BETTER IN RECITATION AND READING QURAN – PART 1
1. Control Your Breath to Achieve Greater Fluency
Mastering breath control is pivotal for a fluent
Quranic recitation. Take measured breaths, filling your lungs steadily before
beginning a verse. Control exhalation to sustain a steady, even recitation
pace. Break verses into smaller segments, ensuring that each part aligns with
your breath capacity.
For instance, inhale before starting a verse, and
exhale while reciting until you reach a natural pause to inhale again. By
gradually managing breath control during recitation, individuals can maintain a
consistent flow without rushing or pausing due to running out of breath.
2. Link
New Habit with Old Habit
This
is without doubt the single most effective way to build a new habit. You need
to link the habit of reciting the Quran in Arabic with something you already do
every single day without fail. Something like brushing your teeth, or putting
your clothes on in the morning. Or how about, linking it with one (or more) of
your 5 daily prayers? That way, you’re already in a state of wudu, so one of
the main psychological barriers is out of the way. If you’re going to do this,
I’d advise that you do it with a prayer you have been doing consistently over
the last few weeks. I’d also recommend you don’t do it if you think you’ll be
stressed. For example, if you’re at work, and are taking three 10 minute breaks
for prayer during the day, turning them into three 15 minute breaks might not
make your boss too happy.
Right
now, make the commitment to recite a small amount of Quran every single day for
the next 30 days after the selected prayer.
3. Listen to Experienced Reciters
Surround yourself with the melodious recitations of
experienced and skilled Quranic reciters. Listen to renowned Qaris who are
known for their beautiful and accurate recitations. Pay attention to their
pronunciation, intonation, and pacing. This exposure will help you internalize
the correct way of reciting and allow you to absorb the beauty of different
styles. You can find numerous recitations online or through audio apps.
4. Always
Make Dua for Success
You
will see many hurdles when achieving your goal. You must turn to Allah
almighty. Allah will surely listen to you. The Almighty has complete control
over the universe and can guide us all. You must tell Allah Almighty to help
you out to achieve the goal. You must pray five times a day to get rewards from
Allah.
5. Recite the Qur’an as loudly as you can without
straining yourself or disturbing others around you.
To quote Strunk & White (respectively), “If you don’t know how to pronounce a word, say it loud!” “Why compound ignorance with inaudibility?” My own childhood teachers would continuously tell me to raise my voice. One of my teachers told me that my voice should fill the entire men’s prayer hall at the Richmond Jamea Masjid (Vancouver, BC). When you mumble, you are hiding your faults. Bring your faults out into the open so your teacher can correct them. Catholics have confession. We have awkward recitation. This is the time for you to bring out your faults. There is a time for quiet devotion. That time isn’t when you’re learning.
