ADVANTAGES OF LEARNING ENGLISH –
PART 1
People all over the world have been learning English as a second
language for literally centuries. English may not be the most spoken language
in the world by native speakers, in this sense alone it must defer to Mandarin
Chinese. However, as the official language of more than 50 countries, spoken by
over 400 million people as a first language and a staggering 1 billion or more
as a second language, be in no doubt that English is easily the most important
language globally!
Here are the advantages of Learning English:
1. Global Communication
English is the most widely spoken second language globally, making
it a bridge language that connects people from different cultures. Proficiency
in English enables individuals to communicate effectively with people from
diverse backgrounds, fostering international understanding and collaboration.
2. English makes it easier to travel
As highlighted before, since English is spoken as a first language
in 53 countries and as a second language in over 118 countries, learning the
language makes it much easier to travel anywhere. Indeed, airport
announcements, train timetables, emergency information and street signs are
often available in English, including in countries where the native language
uses a different type of alphabet. It goes without saying that, when travelling
to a country where you don’t speak the language, you are practically guaranteed
to find someone who understands at least some English.
3. The most popular
entertainment in the world is in English
Hollywood and Netflix
have opened up our minds to brilliantly-told stories and incredible must-see
TV. When you learn English, you won’t need to read pesky subtitles with weird
translations any longer!
Entertainment is also one of the easiest and most fun ways to learn English! For example, you could watch movies with a notepad, pausing throughout to look up new vocabulary. Or, you could “shadow” your favorite characters, by pausing the movie when they say something interesting, and repeating it carefully.
