How Learning History is Important

1. World History as a Guide for Shaping the Future

History serves as a laboratory of human experience, allowing us to learn from past successes and failures. Historians meticulously consult records, including written histories and the insights of thinkers from earlier times. They examine ancient buildings, tools, and bones, while also employing scientific methods to analyze carbon, nitrogen, and other atoms in remnants. This data aids in understanding past human activities and their motivations.

2. History can teach us to be better citizens

Many people, including teachers, consider history an important part of being a good citizen. Students learn about how different policies affect their rights as citizens and how those rights came to be. For example, the history of voting reveals the many groups involved in ensuring voter equality, including the many Black and Indigenous people in places like the United States, Australia, and Canada. When students learn how hard people in the past worked for their rights, they’re more likely to understand how important they are.

3. Understanding the complexities of human behavior

Studying history also helps us to understand the complexities of human behavior. By examining the actions and motivations of historical figures, we can gain insights into the complex factors that influence decision-making and behavior. This can help us better understand ourselves and others, and develop empathy and compassion for those who came before us.
