THE
DEFINITIONS OF LITERATURE
Literature is
any collection of written work, but it is also used more narrowly for
writings specifically considered to be an art form,
especially novels, plays, and poems. It
includes both print and digital writing. In
recent centuries, the definition has expanded to include oral
literature, much of which has been transcribed.
Literature,
a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those
imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their
authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence
of their execution. Literature may be classified according to a variety of
systems, including language,
national origin, historical period, genre, and subject
matter.
Literature is
a group of works of art that are made of words. Most are
written, but some are shared by word of mouth. Literature usually means a work
of poetry, theatre or narrative. There
are many different kinds of literature, such as poetry, plays, or novels.
The definition of literature broadly encompasses written works used to transmit culture. However, literature is not always limited to the written word. The literature meaning can include stories told in the oral tradition and visual literature, such as drama that is intended to be performed before an audience. In addition, literature can be classified into different forms. The term form refers to the writing's structure or organization.
